First Place Student To Appear in Book, Win Trip to Tony Hawk's Stand Up for Skateparks Event
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - May 14, 2012 - Capstone, a leading publisher of children's books and digital products and services, announces the winner of its "Join the Revolution" student writing contest. Inspired by its action-adventure, sci-fi book series Tony Hawk's 900 Revolution, the contest invited students to create a unique and inspiring character to be the next member of the Revolution team, a group of teens on a quest to find the remaining pieces of Tony Hawk's shattered skateboard in Capstone's book series.
Autumn Bray, a 7th grader at Meisler Middle School, Metairie, La., is the first-place winner and will receive a trip to Tony Hawk's Stand Up for Skateparks 2012 event in Beverly Hills and a VIP pass to meet Tony Hawk in person. Her fictional character, Autumn Rose, will appear as part of the Revolution team in a Tony Hawk's 900 Revolution book available August 2013.
"I am truly without words to describe how I feel. Thank you all so much for giving Autumn this wonderful opportunity," said Autumn's father, Douglas Bray, upon finding out his daughter was chosen as the winner.
Autumn's imaginary character is a great student and athlete, active in many sports including cheerleading, softball, soccer, and skateboarding, but loves surfing most of all. Her character likes to try new things and to stand out from the crowd. To see the winning entry, visit www.TonyHawkReadingRevolution.com.
In April, Capstone opened up the voting to students nationwide to choose the contest winner from among five finalists. Descriptions of the finalists' characters, as well as professionally-illustrated renderings of the characters, were posted on the website. The finalists received more than 6,200 total votes.
"We are inspired by the originality and imagination of all of our finalists and want to offer special congratulations to our winner, Autumn. She had a clear vision about the kind of fictional character she wanted to create and was able to effectively articulate her style and personality, which obviously resonated with readers. Her character is smart, confident, and daring - essential ingredients for the next Revolution team member," said Ashley Andersen Zantop, Capstone Group Publisher and General Manager.
All of the finalists will receive a Tony Hawk autographed copy of Drop In: Volume One. The top 50 entrants will receive two books from the series, one copy for themselves and one copy for their school library.
