Net-Zero Carbon Green School Wins National Award for Design Excellence
Varsity Technologies — Tuesday, June 12, 2012
San Francisco, CA - June 12, 2012 - The American Institute of Architects has awarded Trilogy Architecture a Design Excellence Award for its green school project, Redding School of the Arts.
National recognition puts focus back on education - For nationally recognized architect James Theimer, head of Trilogy Architecture, this achievement is of particular significance. Trilogy has been in business for 22 years, and this is its first school project. "This will hopefully start to focus national attention on Redding, California, and the continuing emphasis being placed on education in this community," remarked Theimer.
Completed in the fall of 2011, The Redding School of the Arts is a 77,000 square-foot, K-8 public charter school funded by the McConnell Foundation and constructed by Gifford Construction. With an energy efficient design it has earned LEED® Platinum certification, which is based on a variety of green design and construction features that positively impact both the school itself and the community at large. Some features include the use of non-toxic paints, more than 25% of building materials with recycled content, water saving devices, and sustainable transportation options designed to minimize traditional car transportation.
Vision for a new green school - Trilogy's unique approach to sustainability bridges the gap between what exists outside with what can also exist inside through elegant, sophisticated green design at Redding School of the Arts.
* Exercise area, small cafes, and a theatre all located outdoors.
* A "hole to the sky" theme throughout allowing natural light to pour in.
* Controlled ventilation system that pumps cool air into open hallways.
* Radiant heating creates a warming spot only when students are occupying the space.
* A centrally located dashboard that displays building energy use.
A collaborative and innovative approach - As part of the team that came together to build the school, Bay Area IT company Varsity Technologies worked with Trilogy to design a sustainable and intuitive technology infrastructure to support the inner workings of the school.
"James brought Varsity into this project to add to a team of professionals that could contribute a unique and fresh view on how to design a school. We're very proud of the work we did to bring together technology, instruction, and green design to the Redding School of the Arts project. The AIA design award is an outstanding recognition of the innovation that exists at Redding School of the Arts."
- Patrick Ciccarelli, CEO Varsity Technologies
Trilogy's holistic approach to bringing together a team of professionals committed to sustainable design brought this award-winning green school project to fruition.
"Without question, the best part of this project has been working with a totally committed community - the founders, the teachers, the parents, the designers, the builders and trades, and yes, the children - who actively participated in the process of design for their school."
