The National Wildlife Federation Invites DC, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia Families To Take a Literary Break with Nature's Most Iconic Ambassador

(Reston, Va.) - On September 8, the National Wildlife Federation and its beloved wildlife ambassador Ranger Rick are inviting area residents to connect with nature and the joys of reading with the launch of Read Outdoors with Ranger Rick Day! Taking a page from research findings about the physical and emotional benefits of spending time in nature, this new campaign and sweepstakes encourages families, groups, schools, and anyone with a child in their lives to pledge to conduct story time outside with Ranger Rick magazines, books, and content, and to participate in an outdoor nature activity.  Printable Ranger Rick stories and activity guides are available for the big day on

Read Outdoors with Ranger Rick Day is made possible through the support of 92.5 WINC FM, Stohlman Subaru, Blue Star Education, and Teacher Created Resources.

"Over the past 50 years, Ranger Rick has introduced millions of kids to the importance of reading and connecting with the great outdoors, which are two of the simplest ways to help today's young adventurers understand how they can take an active role in caring for wildlife and our natural world," said Collin O'Mara, President and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation.  "The fun-filled and informative escapades of Ranger Rick and his friends are the perfect reading material to inspire every American child to explore and discover the wonders of wildlife that await outside."

Leading up to Read Outdoors with Ranger Rick Day on September 8, participants can go to and find the Read Outdoors with Ranger Rick button to pledge online and be eligible to win Ranger Rick Prize Packs with Ranger Rick books, magazines, plush, binoculars, bookmarks, and gift cards, as well as free subscriptions to a Ranger Rick magazine of their choice.  Those who pledge are encouraged to nominate a local elementary school to be entered into a drawing. The winning school will receive the Grand Prize of 12 Ranger Rick curriculum kits complete with free professional development training for their use, two Read Outdoors with Ranger Rick backpacks for the school library, and enough Ranger Rick classroom décor and supplies for two classrooms provided by Blue Star Education and Teacher Created Resources and valued at over $7,000.

Listen to 92.5 WINC FM every Wednesday morning at 8:10am for Wildlife Wednesdays, when National Wildlife Federation Naturalist, Dave Mizejewski, shares exciting tips and facts about local wildlife and encourages you to read outdoors with your kids on Friday, September 8th for Read Outdoors with Ranger Rick.

Read Outdoors with Ranger Rick is based on research that shows outdoor time helps children stay active, enhances imaginations and attention spans, and boosts classroom performance.  Children who spend time in nature regularly are also shown to become better stewards of the environment (
In addition, studies have shown that the content in Ranger Rick magazines help children in their ability to read basic information with a critical eye and understand differences between fact and fiction or hypothesis and conclusion, as well as assisting with learning core concepts of natural science.
