Dr. Eric Mazur is the Balkanski Professor of Physics and Applied Physics at Harvard University. An internationally recognized scientist and researcher, he leads a vigorous research program in optical physics and supervises one of the largest research groups in the Physics Department at Harvard University. In 1990 he began developing Peer Instruction a method for teaching large lecture classes interactively. Dr. Mazur's teaching method has developed a large following, both nationally and internationally, and has been adopted across many science disciplines. He is the author of Peer Instruction: A User's Manual (Prentice Hall, 1997), a book that explains how to teach large lecture classes interactively. Mazur is also the Chairman of the Instructional Strategy Advisory Group for Turning Technologies.
Dr. Derek Bruff consults regularly with instructors in a variety of disciplines about educational technology and other teaching and learning topics. Bruff's research interests center on investigating effective uses of classroom response systems (“clickers”). His book on the topic, Teaching with Classroom Response Systems: Creating Active Learning Environments, was published by Jossey-Bass in February 2009. In his mathematics teaching, Bruff uses clickers as well as a variety of other educational technologies.
Dr. William Rankin is an associate professor of English and Director of Educational Innovation at Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas. Along with colleagues George Saltsman and Dr. Kyle Dickson, he helped design the initiative that became ACU Connected, ACU’s pioneering one-to-one initiative that gave every student an iPhone or iPod touch as a platform for exploring next-wave mobile learning. As part of this initiative, Rankin has worked on everything from defining pedagogical approaches to designing interface elements, and he continues to work to discover and create new ways to engage learners through emerging technologies. In 2009 he was named an Apple Distinguished Educator and in 2010 to Apple's ADE Board of Directors.
Dr. Dan Levy is one of the founding faculty members of SLATE (“Strengthen Learning And Teaching Excellence”), an initiative aimed at promoting excellence in teaching at the Kennedy School at Harvard University. His research interests lie in the area of evaluating the effectiveness of social programs both in the U.S. and developing countries. Dr. Levy will be discussing how classroom response systems (or “clickers”) can be used in the broader context of actively engaging students in learning, and of assessing student learning.
