Change and Progress

It’s been a busy week all around. On Wednesday, Quality Education Data found a new home when MDR, a D&B Company, completed its acquisition of QED from Scholastic, Inc. Both organizations have long histories of serving the sales and marketing needs of the education market. The synergies from the combined strengths of both MDR and QED will result in an organization that offers better information, wider sales coverage, improved customer service and a broader range of innovative marketing solutions. FETC Roundup

A few things I’d like to call to the attention of readers. With the economic stimulus package on the fast track in Washington, we’ve adjusted our Virtual Roundtable schedule to add a program on Feb 25th that will provide as much preliminary information as is then available from a panel of experts who have been deeply involved in planning, lobbying and interacting with the President’s team. We’re also working hard at building up the resources in the Community Insights section of B2E. This is your part of B2E. We welcome you input and feedback. Read More »

Yes We Can

Amidst the emotional eloquence of President Obama's inaugural address and grand vision for the country pulling itself up by its bootstraps, you may be forgiven for wondering how much is poetry and how much is prose, aka reality. At Tuesday night's Bytes and Books Inaugural Ball in Washington, DC, insiders' off the record conversation leaned heavily towards reality. Read More »

Are You Ready for the Economic Stimulus Package?

Do you have a wish list? On the eve of the Inauguration, we all have hopes and expectations pinned to the incoming President’s coat tails. Change is inevitable and while it’s too early to know the exact shape of that change, it’s not too early to begin planning for the future. Though the first details of the economic stimulus package are just beginning to emerge, this is legislation that likely to be fast-tracked and everyone needs to be poised to respond not just quickly but also intelligently to ensure that school and student needs are well served. Data Shed Light on State Policies, Progress

Happy New Year everyone! Several data-rich reports were released this week. Looking To 2009

The snow and cold in Chicago is a constant reminder that we are approaching the official start of winter, though it’s felt like winter for the past month. Things are beginning to slow a bit as the Holidays approach and people are preparing to travel, or entertain, or just take a few days for themselves as the year winds down. The New Year promises to be exciting (and challenging) and I think we are all looking forward to what 2009 holds. Read More »

Beyond TIMSS

Earlier this week, the National Center for Education Statistics released results on the performance of U.S. students on the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). There's a lot of food for thought here and a lot to be learned from other countries and their education systems. Read More »

New Features and More

In the two weeks since our last issue there have been a lot of headlines. I’ve included most of them in this issue, but not all, in the interest of length. If you want to see all the headlines from the last two weeks, go to the B2E home page (http://b2e.qeddata.com/) and browse the various categories. While you’re there, check out the new polling feature we’ve added. It’s in the left hand column, just below the Editor’s Note box (or above Vicki’s Snoops column, if that’s where you start your weekly read. Tell us what you think and see what the rest of our community thinks about the issue. We’ve also added a new article to the Community Insights section... Read More »

Open for Business

A new report, The Impact of the Economic Downturn of Schools, from the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), highlights some of the challenges that superintendents are facing and how they are addressing those issues. Even in the current environment, schools and districts are clearly open for business. This sentiment was echoed in QED/The Heller Reports recent Educator Insight Webinar - A Discussion with District Technology Leaders. Read More »
