The snow and cold in Chicago is a constant reminder that we are approaching the official start of winter, though it’s felt like winter for the past month. Things are beginning to slow a bit as the Holidays approach and people are preparing to travel, or entertain, or just take a few days for themselves as the year winds down. Even in the current environment, schools and districts are clearly open for business. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced a new strategy for its grant making in the education arena. The Foundation will continue its focus on ensuring that all students graduate from high school ready for college and is adding a new initiative focused on improving postsecondary education so that more students earn a degree or certificate with genuine economic value. According to several recent studies, schools are using technology more and some are beginning to address the disconnect between students’ wired life outside the classroom and the more “tuned down” way that students operate within the school environment. Education Week is webcasting "Education and the Next President," a debate between Linda Darling-Hammond, education adviser to Democratic nominee Barack Obama, and Lisa Graham Keegan, education adviser to Republican nominee John McCain on Tuesday, October 21, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Eastern time. In 2012, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) will begin testing students’ technological literacy. The Brownsville ISD (TX) won the prestigious Broad Prize for Urban Education. Continuing Resolution Will Hold Education Funding Flat

As the federal fiscal year drew to a close on September 30, Congress passed and the President signed into law a Continuing Resolution for FY09 Appropriations that established FY 09 spending levels through March 6, 2009, funding all education programs at FY 08 levels.
