OCCC and Blackboard Partner on Predictive Analytics

Blackboard Predict Will Empower Advisors with Timely Information Needed To Help Students Complete College at a Higher Rate

WASHINGTON, D.C., August 3, 2017 - Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) and Blackboard Inc. today announced an expansion of their 10-year partnership. This new phase of collaboration is designed to close achievement gaps and increase the number of students who complete a certificate or degree. Beginning in Spring 2018, the college will implement Blackboard Predict, a leading predictive analytics solution that analyzes student's data and activities in online learning environments to provide educators and advisors with the timely information they need to help students successfully complete their courses.

Since 2007, OCCC has used Moodlerooms, Blackboard's open-source based learning management system (LMS), to deliver a high-quality online learning experience and improve outcomes for its 28,000 students. Now, the college plans to implement Blackboard Predict to help identify students exhibiting symptoms of risk, and intervene before they go off track. Blackboard Predict will use data from OCCC's existing student information system and Moodlerooms to build a predictive model that provides clear, actionable insights and risk reports that can be used to help students succeed. The solution offers engaging visualizations that help to drive action on the part of students, advisors, and faculty. It also enables faculty to easily pass early alerts along to professional academic counselors in support of proactive and intensive advising practices.

"At OCCC, we aspire to significantly raise the educational achievement of all our students," said Stu Harvey, Executive Director of Planning and Research at Oklahoma City Community College. "Blackboard Predict will empower us reach out to struggling students in time to make a meaningful difference. These efforts are critical as Oklahoma looks to fill its skills gap and produce highly-skilled workers that are well-prepared to contribute to the state economy."

This expanded partnership supports OCCC's 2018 Roadmap, developed as a guide to keep the college on the path to greater significance. More than 80% of new students indicate their educational goal is to earn a degree, yet less than 60% return to OCCC or go to another college after their first semester. The 2018 Roadmap outlines several "big goals" to increase educational achievement at the college. Two of those goals are to increase the number of students who complete a certificate or degree by 50%; and to close the academic achievement gaps that persist with low-income and first-generation students, as well as some racial and ethnic groups.

"Blackboard is proud to support Oklahoma City Community College as they leverage data to drive student success," said Brook Bock, Vice President of Student Success and Mobile at Blackboard.  "We look forward to continuing to work with their team to identify students at risk of not succeeding, and help them conduct timely and contextually relevant interventions."
