NC Virtual Public School Uses SAS® Curriculum Pathways® for SAT Prep, Struggling Students; SAS Online Resources Highlighted at Virtual School Symposium
CARY, N.C.--(via BUSINESS WIRE)--The North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS) is using SAS Curriculum Pathways to build Web-based curriculum resources in English, math, science, social studies and Spanish. NCVPS has incorporated SAS Curriculum Pathways into the school’s online SAT preparation classes and into a credit-recovery program that isolates concepts a student needs to pass a specific class.
Fully funded by SAS and offered at no cost to US educators and students, SAS Curriculum Pathways saves NCVPS significant money, time and effort. “It provides teachers with quick curriculum resources and we don’t need to buy another product to create the interactive experiences,” said Dr. Tracy Weeks, Chief Academic Officer for NCVPS. “SAS Curriculum Pathways is a very attractive and effective product – a one-stop shop for course development.’’
NCVPS enrolls high school students from across the state in more than 100 online courses, including several world languages and Advanced Placement classes not easily available at local schools. Online curriculum resources from SAS Curriculum Pathways are critical components in many NCVPS courses, and a vital asset for innovative credit-recovery offerings.
“Our teachers are also our course developers, which leads to high quality learning experiences,’’ explains Weeks.
NCVPS teaches nearly 20,000 students each term, from every district in the state, utilizing course management software to maximize student interaction. The courses are taught by certified teachers using video, interactive white boards, wikis, active worlds and online discussion tools to meet state standards and engage 21st century learners.
SAS Curriculum Pathways, used by thousands of educators in all 50 states, provides standards-based content for grades 8-12 in the core academic disciplines – English, mathematics, social studies, science and Spanish. The product offers more than 1,200 academic resources, including lessons, engaging activities and interactive teaching tools, plus links to more than 4,000 academically appropriate websites.
SAS Curriculum Pathways engages NCVPS students with critical thinking exercises, offers material suitable to students with different learning styles and helps teachers build course components with dual purposes, like linear equation word problems with environmental themes.
“This lets us address environmental literacy at the same time we’re teaching the content,’’ Weeks explains.
SAS Curriculum Pathways also offers Writing Reviser, an automated writing coach that provides extensive feedback on everything from verb selection to sentence construction. “This is a valuable tool,’’ explains Ellen Minter, NCVPS Curriculum and Instruction Division Director. “As a parent of a high school student who struggles with writing, I’ve used my daughter’s experience with Writing Reviser to encourage teachers to use it in their online classes.
The school is designing curriculum for students with significant learning disabilities. Now required to be taught by teachers certified in each subject area, these students have been traditionally taught by generalists in a self-contained classroom. Online offerings will help them learn subjects in more depth, while staying with their classroom teachers.
Weeks especially appreciates that SAS Curriculum Pathways is designed by teachers and is frequently refreshed. “It’s not a stagnant product. It continues to improve and grow. And I know it comes from teachers, so it is well-informed.’’
Educators from NCVPS and Florida Virtual School will present their favorite SAS Curriculum Pathways interactivities at iNACOL’s Virtual School Symposium 2010. SAS Curriculum Pathways representatives will also be presenting on open, digital content and how to think like a writer using Writing Reviser.
