Edmodo Offers New Online PD Courses

Courses from NY Partners for Technology Innovation and The University of Virginia
SAN MATEO, CA, Monday August 07, 2017. Edmodo, the leading global education platform with over 80 million users, has partnered with New York Partners for Technology Innovation and The Center for Teaching Excellence at The University of Virginia's College at Wise to offer convenient and affordable online professional development courses for educators.

The professional development courses avail of the unique social capabilities of Edmodo, where peer-to-peer interaction is a crucial part of the teaching and learning experience. Research has shown that course completion rates are three to five times higher when courses are done with a group of peers.

New York Partners for Technology Innovation (NYPTI), is an approved Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) Sponsor through the New York State Education Department. They work closely with New York State Teacher Centers and have created over fifty CTLE-approved online professional development courses for New York State teachers.

All courses are worth fifteen hours and adhere to rigorous online course standards set by the NYS Teacher Center Technology Committee in conjunction with NYSED Professional Development standards.

"Our courses blend anytime online learning convenience with synchronous video conference sessions for the best practices of both individual reflection on teacher practice and group activity within a learning community," says Carol Weintraub, Director of the New York Partners for Technology Innovation. She explains that "rigor, group-based learning and accountability" are critical goals.

Previous and ongoing courses can be found at, with a new fall session being announced soon.

The Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) at The University of Virginia's College at Wise was established to enhance the quality of public education. The Center is committed to serving the professional development and in-service needs of teachers and administrators.

The UVA Wise Center for Teaching Excellence has developed several online professional development workshops on Edmodo. Each workshop is worth five hours, and is available for all teachers. Participants are guided through five modules related to the topic of their workshop. Subjects include "QR Codes in the Classroom", "Gamifying Instruction with Google", "Using the SAMR model To Infuse Technology Into Instruction" and many more.

After satisfactory completion of all course work, each participant will receive a certificate of completion for five hours from UVA. A set of five new workshops begins this week. You can find more information here.

"The CTE's new series of POP PD workshops was created in response to teachers asking for smaller, more targeted online professional learning opportunities. 'POP' literally stands for 'personalized online portions' of professional development. These workshops are designed for self-exploration of an ever-growing list of topics," says Heather Askea, Instructional Technology Coordinator at the UVA Wise Center for Teaching Excellence.
